Wearing An Orthopedic Brace
There are lots of different kinds of injuries, genetic conditions and diseases that can cause problems with our bones, muscles and joints. Orthopedics is the medical branch that is responsible for prevention and treatment of these types of conditions.
Medically, an orthopedic physician diagnoses and evaluates the condition. Sometimes the problem is serious enough that it requires surgery, but most injuries can be treated with more conservative means, rather than an intrusive approach that requires a great deal of recovery and rehabilitation time.
Some of the more commonly forms of orthopedic injuries are fractures of the bones, which include breaks, and sprains and strains. Sprains occur when a ligament is stretched or torn. A strain is when the stretching or tearing happens to a muscle or tendon.
Surely, When you experience a basic broken bone, the usual form of treatment is putting on a cast. The bone, once it is set, must remain in exactly the same position in order for the fracture to heal properly and the bone to return to its original position and strength. However, sprains and strains don't usually need to be held in place so stiffly.
An orthopedic brace is an appliance whose key objective is to keep movement constraint or limited in a certain direction, immobilize a body segment or joint, assist movement, decrease the weight that must be borne by the injured joint or bone, or to correct the shape of the body.
A brace possesses a similar function to a cast, but is only temporary. It can be removed, which is convenient for cleaning. Common types of braces include neck braces and knee braces, but there are others as well. Often when we hear the term “brace” we think of those that correct the shape of the body, such as with leg braces for children with clubfoot.
An orthopedic brace is made up of many different materials. Some braces are meant to allow for a little movement. These braces might be made of elastic or neoprene. The primary purpose of these braces is to support the joint and allow for normal movement without the risk of further damage to the joint.
Other orthopedic braces are produced from a stiffer material that gives a more restrictive type of support. These might be made of a hard plastic, or metal. These are made more for the purpose of immobilizing a joint, or part of the body.
Although the feeling is rather uncomfortable or causes some inconveniences to wear a brace, if your doctor has prescribed that you wear one, it is best to follow the prescription until the end. An injury can only heal if the conditions are right. If a joint or tendon is constantly being moved or strained, it is impossible for it to heal properly or for the inflammation to go down. Not wearing your brace can reverse any help that your physician has given you and can lead to more serious problems in the future.
