Become The Best Physician You Can With An Orthopedic Fellowship

It is known to everyone that the pursuit towards becoming a doctor requires a lot of hard work. Years of undergraduate school, followed by medical school and any other type of specialized training is required for anyone to become a doctor. It takes serious dedication and effort and self discipline.

Not all people are suitable for such a job as this. You have to be truly dedicated and love the profession to do what it takes to become a doctor. And all doctors are not created equal. An orthopedic physician or surgeon requires extra training in their specific field.

Working towards to be an orthopedic surgeon is a very challenging process. Only about three or four percent of all doctors in the United States are orthopedic doctors. Some of these practice general orthopedics, but others go on to become specialists.

The journey of becoming an orthopedic doctor is not much different to that those who pursue to become any other type of doctor, as after undergraduate studies, medical school comes afters. A residency consists of five years, one spent in regular medicine, and the other four in orthopedic medicine.

For the keen orthopedic doctor who desires to widen his horizons, or, rather, narrow them, there are lots of orthopedic specialties that they can opt to go into. Some of these include hip replacement, joint replacement, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, spine surgery, orthopedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics and many others.

Generally to access to training in one of these subspecialties, the doctor should connect with a fellowship. An orthopedic fellowship is offered by many hospitals and universities. Generally an orthopedic fellowship is offered by the subspecialty that it is under. A hospital may offer a orthopedic oncology fellowship or a university might run a pediatric orthopedic fellowship. The same goes for every other type of subspecialty in orthopedics.

An orthopedic fellowship usually lasts for a period of a year, though some may stretch into two years. During this time, there is both clinical and operative training in that specific area. On top of this there is normally a research element to the fellowship as well. This gives a very well rounded training, both with hands-on experience, as well as studying and research.

The advantages and benefits of participating in a orthopedic fellowship are abundant. A huge amount of knowledge is gained during this relatively short time. Working with other doctors who have years of experience in the chosen field can have a huge impact on the person. They can learn much more than they did during their residency, as they have the opportunity to focus time and energy on this specific area.

The pursuit to be an orthopedic physician will need a lot of effort on your part. Then to add to that specializing, with the extra work required, it is a difficult road. However, it can be a very rewarding one when you are able to work in exactly the area you want to, and you can make a difference in so many people's lives.
