The Variety Of Orthopedic Jobs

Orthopedics is an important area of medicine that encompasses so many important aspects of our health. In dealing with the musculoskeletal system, any type of disorder, disease, infection, tumor, injury or trauma that occur in this are is covered under orthopedics. This means that there are a huge variety of doctors and other workers that work in this field.

Orthopedic jobs vary greatly. The top job is an orthopedic surgeon who actually performs the surgeries to these important parts of the body. Some such surgeries include hip replacement, spinal surgery and various other joint replacement and reconstructions. To become a orthopedic surgeon, and especially one with a subspecialty, it requires years of education and training.

Physicians in the orthopedic field also require extensive training. They may not be involved in operations but they play a very important role in diagnosing and treating many different conditions and injuries.

Helping the Orthopedic surgeon or physician is the orthopedic technologist. This person has many important responsibilities, including assisting the doctor during operation, and helping the doctor manipulate injuries. An orthopedic tech also has the important responsibility of casting, including fabricating and removing casts, and fitting patients with orthopedic appliances.

Another orthopedic job is a prosthetist. In this position, a certified prosthetist evaluates, designs and fabricates prostheses, or artificial limbs. This is a very technical job that requires extensive education and training to be able to perform. Getting a prosthetic device just right is very difficult to do, so this type of orthopedic job is not for everyone.

There are also the orthotists who evaluate and made orthotics, which are orthopedic appliances such as braces, splints and collars. A pedorthotist creates shoe inserts to help with various conditions of the feet. These inserts help make walking less painful and position the foot properly. There are also special orthopedic shoes that are designed by pedorthotist.

Of course on the less technical side, there are those involved in orthopedic sales. This might be the representative who approaches hospitals or clinics offering their services, all the way down to the person that sits in a orthotics shop. This type of job does not require as much training, but it is certainly necessary for anyone involved in orthopedic sales to have a very good understanding of the products they are selling.

It is also important for an orthopedic salesman to know a lot about different conditions that require patients to purchase and wear the orthopedic appliances that they sell. They have to know how to help someone make the right choice about what device they will purchase, finding the right fit.

There are an abundance of different orthopedic jobs if you're looking to make such a career. It is important to consider that becoming a physician may not be that simple, as it requires a good deal of training, and orthopedic physicians make up only a very small percentage of all doctors in the United States (about three or four percent).
