Orthopedic Shoulder Problems
You may be surprized to know that your shoulder is actually the most active and movable joint in the body. The ball of the upper arm fits into the socket on the shoulder. To keep this in place there are many muscles, tendons and ligaments that hold it together. A There are many problems that can occur with this joint, as the bone can be dislocated and various problems can occur with the connective tissue.
There are many different types of orthopedic shoulder problems that can occur at various times in your life. Some of these are quite minor, and others can be very serious and require complex surgeries. An orthopedic shoulder expert knows the best way to deal with these situations, especially the most dramatic conditions.
Some injuries that might happen to the shoulder include sprains, which are stretched or torn ligaments, strains, strains, which are stretched or torn muscles or tendons, and dislocations, which is when the ends of the bones are moved out of place. Tendinitis is when a tendon or tendons become swollen and inflamed, often as a result of overuse.
With these types of injuries to the shoulder, there is a method of treatment that is always recommended. It is known as RICE, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Other forms of treatment include exercises to strengthen and restore the joint, and medicine to treat the pain or reduce swelling.
Arthritis of the shoulder is not as common as some other kinds of arthritis. It is when the cartilage of the joint is worn down, which results in painful, stiff and sometimes swollen joints. Bursitis is a condition wherein the sacs that cushion the joint are inflamed. This is sometimes a result of arthritis or infection. With frozen shoulder, the shoulder might suddenly become immovable.
Separations and fractures are some other injuries that might be caused to the shoulder. These, like most of the previously mentioned conditions, should be treated with RICE, or with some of the elements of that method. Also, medication is often given to help relieve pain and reduce swelling.
When the RICE method is not enough for a shoulder to heal itself, sometimes manipulation is necessary by an orthopedic shoulder doctor. In some cases surgery is required, and is performed by a orthopedic shoulder surgeon.
Some types of shoulder surgery are joint replacement surgery, where the entire joint is replaced with a new one. Shoulder arthroscopy is when a small incision is made in the shoulder and a tiny camera is used to examine or repair tissue in the joint. The options of what can be done during a shoulder arthroscopy are many. It can be used to made diagnosis and treat many of the conditions that affect the shoulder.
