Treating Spine Orthopedic Conditions
In the working industry all occupations are not created equal. Some jobs are easier than others, some make a big social impact, and others are virtually unseen. Doctors have a job that is highly respected, as they care for our health, which is one of the most important aspects of our lives.
Even among doctors there is a great deal of variation in the difficulty of the job. A family practitioner certainly has to know a great deal about a wide range of ailments and conditions, but their practice is generally not very hands on. On the other hand, surgeons have to work with extreme caution, knowing the very minute details of their subjects.
In order to operate on any part of the body, a doctor must have a lot of training and practice. Some parts of the body, though, are even more sensitive than others. The spine is one of the most important parts of our bodies, with the spinal column and all messages being relayed from the brain down the spine.
Because of the delicacy and importance of the spine, when a person is diagnosed with a spine orthopedic problem, the decision to operate is not taken lightly. First all other means of treating the problems and providing relief are considered. If necessary, an operation may be performed, but this is one of the very technical and dangerous types of surgery.
A spine orthopedic surgeon most often operates on the spine because of problems with the discs that rest between each vertebrae. Some of these conditions include herniated, degenerative, thinning, or bulging discs. Other spine orthopedic conditions include spinal stenosis, arthritis of the spine, bone spurs, a pinched nerve, scar tissue, sciatica and others.
Some surgeries that might be performed are discectomy, wherein a portion of a disc is removed, as in a herniated disc. Spine fusion is done to fuse parts of the spine together to stop unwanted motion. Another type of surgery is a spinal disc replacement. This type of surgery is not commonly done.
Although these surgeries do sometimes need to be performed, more commonly there are non-invasive treatments that are attempted first. These have been used for centuries. A chiropractor is trained in how to manipulate the spine through various means. After an x ray is taken he can move the patient in various ways to help get the spine in the correct position. However, this can be dangerous, so you must be careful. Acupuncture has bee used for thousands of years and can be effective on spine orthopedic conditions. Also, massage is great for providing relief from back pain. However, this is a very temporary solution, as relief rarely last long beyond treatment.
Another option that is available is laser spine surgery. This is usually a minimally invasive procedure that can provide results similar to more traditional surgeries.
